Galicia is the most westerly region in Spain, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Portugal to the south, the Bay of Biscay to the north and the regions of Castile, Asturias and Leon to the east.
The capital of Galicia is Santiago de Compostela, the historic cathedral city and World Heritage Site. The inhabitants descend from one of the first tribes of Celtic heritage in Europe, and the Galician language is widely spoken, alongside Spanish.
In 2008 Galicia has a population of 2,800,000, the main centres of population being Vigo and A Coruna.
A Coruna is a popular holiday destination for the residents of Madrid, many of whom make the long journey to the north coast at the beginning of August each year and stay for the whole month!
